Royal castle established in the first half of the 13th century to defend the city of Brno.
From the 17th century a provincial fortress, and in the 18th and 19th centuries a prison of the Hapsburg monarchy.
From 1939 - 1940 a gestapo prison, and later a military site. Since 1950, the site of the Brno City Museum.
