The foundation of the town is connected to silver mining and minting in the first half of the 13th century.
The historic core encompasses the square, which at 3,6 ha is among the largest in Central Europe.
The burghers´ town houses, St James´ Church, the Minorite Church of the Assumption, the Dominican Church of the Holy Cross, the town walls with the Mother of God Gate, and the multiple levels of catacombs stretching some 24 km in all, are of particular value.
